Who Were the Overlooked?
- Who created the images and content?
Research Focus
Behind every book are people whose contributions may not always be clearly recognised. In many of the books published by Whitcombe & Tombs, those involved were not explicitly credited, or appeared only by their initials. Other books identified only the publisher. As a result, editors, adapters and illustrators are easily overlooked, despite the vital role they play in the creation of a book. This exhibition area focuses on the authors and editors who worked with Whitcombe & Tombs, showcasing their contributions through the books they helped produce.
Exhibition Experience
Each display area begins with a book, positioned at the top as the primary visual focal point. Below the book, information on the author and editor is presented side by side, giving equal attention to both roles and illustrating how each contributed to the book’s publication. Further down, related materials are displayed, including illustrations, historical documents and correspondence between the author and editor. These materials link the published book to the people and work behind it.
We invite visitors to begin with the books, to get to know the people involved, and then to learn about their work through historical materials. By combining publications, personal narratives and archival materials, this exhibition area illustrates publishing as a collaborative process. It encourages visitors to look beyond the book covers and recognise the people who, though often overlooked, played a part in shaping these books and their history.
